Machining Capabilities Expanded at Goldens Foundry
June 2007
Columbus, GA – Machining operations recently expanded at Goldens Foundry & Machine Co. with the addition of two new horizontal machining centers at its Cordele facility, allowing the company to increase productivity in their machining operations.
“By opening up the new facility, and making the continuous improvements in Columbus, we are in a position to grow our machining and overall value added output,” said Ed Boyd, vice president of operations. “We currently have open capacity at the machine shop and by opening up another shift of work. We will be really looking to add additional machining work to complement the increased casting work we are already seeing.”
Goldens’ currently has 28 CNC controlled machines between both locations, and a separate turning operation where the majority of work is focused on Goldens’ historic stronghold in the power transmission business.
The new machines and additional tooling capacity at existing machines has been an added impetus for improvement at the 125 year-old machining operation. Lean manufacturing principles were instituted in 2005, and the positive effects from these steps are being passed on to customers. “The continuous improvements we have made are showing up in the quality and delivery objectives we are meeting,” said Joey Giglio, machine shop supervisor.
