Goldens’ Foundry & Machine Co. Begins Operations in New Foundry

April 2007
Cordele, GA – Years of planning followed by months of development came to fruition today as a new foundry began pouring iron. Goldens’ Foundry & Machine Co. officially opened its new operation for business, more than doubling the companies capacity and creating new growth opportunities.

The new foundry presents an opportunity for growth not only with the quantity of castings it can produce, but also the variety of casting business it can target. Due to the new installation of a 28x36 12/12 tight-flask cope and drag machine by Savelli, Goldens’ has an opportunity to expand on its small to medium sized casting market presence.

“This new machine, coupled with the outstanding furnaces which can feed more iron to the molding line than we will need, will open up a tremendous opportunity for us to grow,” said George Boyd, Sr, president and CEO. The new molding line, only the second Savelli molding machine installed in the United States, is programmed to run at 110 molds per hour, and features an automatic pattern change operation that takes only one minute.

“The machine fits with the type of market we target, as it provides us the flexibility to remain a ‘job shop’ mentality but also be equipped to handle larger volume runs,” he said.

Goldens-Cordele Plant Manager Larry Sims called the new machine a breakthrough in Goldens’ capabilities that “will provide the ability to grow and allow us to keep doing what we do best, making a large variety of parts for a large number of customers.”

Goldens’ prides itself on the various industries it serves, and the new foundry will allow them to continue pursuing their target markets by increasing the flexibility of the type of parts they can run. No longer limited to the three existing Hunter molding lines in Columbus, the new Savelli machine will produce near net-shape castings and thereby reduce the need for certain finishing, coring, and machining operations.

“This is the largest undertaking in our 125 year history, and we are betting on it being the essential step to position us for 125 more years,” Mr. Boyd said.
